I was very excited to try this fragrance. I have completely fallen in love with Memo Paris African Leather for its rich, warm, animalistic vibe, outstanding projection, and seemingly endless longevity. I was hoping for a French-inspired version with similar qualities, and thankfully, that’s mostly what I got: a much more delicate and aromatic scent, one that reminded me of traditional French values such as elegant sophistication and romantic allure. French Leather is part of Memo Paris’s “Cuirs Nomades” collection, a series of fragrances built around the idea of leather interpreted through different countries and moods. The leather notes in this fragrance are a little more subtle than African Leather, more like an expensive velvety suede handbag rather than a sturdy black leather jacket, much more tasteful and intimate. The projection and longevity are not as pronounced as those of African Leather, but I don’t think this fragrance would work well with those qualities, as that would destroy the graceful classiness of how its notes come together. The Bergamot, Lime, and Juniper make for a surprisingly clean and airy opening for a leather fragrance. The Rose and Clary Sage keep the heart of the fragrance fresh and floral. But with its slightly Cedarwood drydown, its base finds a nice woody grounding, where the leather note continues, full and completely alive as it was with the first spray. An exquisite fragrance, very tasteful, refined, and distinguished. I can’t wait to try Memo Paris’s other leather scents, such as Irish Leather and Ocean Leather. If they’re half as good as African Leather and French Leather, I’ll be over the moon.
