I rarely choose to include celebrity fragrances here on Scentsarama, but every now and then, a really good one arises from the masses. Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, and Lady Gaga have all had tremendous success with their personalized fragrances, and while many are top sellers, once in a while, there’s one that catches my attention, smells wonderful, and has a special presence. Katherine Von Drachenberg, better known as Kat Von D, is a famous tattoo artist and, in 2009, released Sinner, alongside its companion fragrance Saint. She was known for her beauty aesthetic and launched a successful makeup line that received rave reviews. And even though she only released these two fragrances to much praise, they were both discontinued, only to be re-released in 2017 due to popular demand. While Saint was very sweet and fruity, Sinner was considered its much darker and moodier sister. Its opening is a slightly juicy combination of Mandarin and Plum, with a floral and spicy heart where Jasmine is mixed with the heat of Cinnamon. The dry-down is a very deep, earthy mix of Patchouli and Vanilla, giving it the gothic feel that became its signature. Sinner became popular because it wasn’t the typical fresh or sugary celebrity fragrance of its time, leaning instead toward dark florals and spice, making it stand out and giving it a niche-like vibe contained in a mainstream release. Usually, the bottle containing the scent is of little concern to me, but this one was truly beautiful and unique, featuring a black filigree design, showcasing the fragrance as if it were a bottle of poison from some gothic legend of times gone by.
